Fungal Nail Infection Treatment & Management

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail that causes thickening and discoloration of the nail. Dermatophytes, yeast or mould are the culprit that often causes toenail fungus and is commonly found on skin, nails, hair and other bodily surfaces. The dermatophytes, mould or yeast infect the nail bed, matrix and plate. Fungal infections can present in a number of ways, affecting the colour, shape and overall appearance of the nail. There is rarely pain associated with the infection. However, it does require treatment to avoid the infection spreading.

What causes fungal nail infections?

Fungus infections are caused by an overgrowth of fungi, which thrive in warm, moist areas. Generally, the fungus begins to grow at the end of the nail plate and continues to grow under the nail. If left untreated, a chalky, white plaque may form on the nail surface. Which can cause cell damage to the nail base, causing the nail to thicken and change in shape.

How do we treat fungal nail infections?

Treatments for fungal nail infections consist of conservative approaches and more permanent surgical procedures. Conservative treatments include the cutting and thinning of nails by a podiatrist and the application of an antifungal topical medicament. If conservative treatment methods are not proven successful, surgical treatment may be the only solution. This involves the administration of a Local Anaesthetic and the removal of the nail. A nail surgery can be performed in our Springwood clinic.
