Foot Pain & Bunions
What are bunions?
A bunion (hallux valgus) is a bump on the side of the big toe that shows a change in the big toe joint. It is a progressive deformity, meaning that it changes the angle of the bones over time, increasing the prominence of the bony bump. The other toes may also become involved by overriding, under-riding or hammering to make room for the big toe.
What are some symptoms of bunions?
A bony bump on the inside or top of the big toe (can become red and swollen)
Stiff joints; arthritis
A deep aching pain inside the joint (which worsens with tight or ill fitting footwear)
A misshapen second toe
Pain under second toe joint
Difficulty fitting into shoes
How do we treat Bunions?
In most cases, early conservative treatment is recommended to slow or ideally, stop the progression of the joint deformity. Some treatments include:
Improved footwear
Strengthening exercises
Toe stretches and gentle mobilisations
A bunion splint
Toe separators
If conservative approaches fail to stop the progression of the bunion, then surgery may need to be considered.
A surgical procedure removes the bump and corrects the changes in the bony structure of the foot.
